Boosting Site Speed with Image Optimisation for Azzurri Group

Always looking for ways to improve their customer’s experience, Azzurri Group came to Propeller wanting to boost their site speed. Propeller knew just the ticket to get their pages up to speed: image optimisation.
Propeller enabled all images on the websites to automatically upload into the optimum image format for the web. This one-off update to the site not only changed the file types of the existing images, but has future-proofed future image uploads, too.
Propeller finished this project proud to have elevated Azzurri Group’s pages, with an average increase for desktop performance of 26% across their four websites. Read on to learn how Propeller boosted Azzurri Group’s site speed in the case study…
The Approach
Propeller chose image optimisation as their strategy as they know it has the potential to improve loading speed time across the board and improve overall Google Core Web Vitals scores.
Image optimisation involves maintaining high-quality images and refining them in the best format, size, and resolution to improve site speed.
This is important not just for boosting site speed, however. Image optimisation also serves to improve the user experience and SEO. The latter is radically improved as it ensures your images rank in image searches on Google. This is also beneficial to the SEO of the entire website. To top this point off, page speed also plays a key part in Google’s search algorithm. Image optimisation will help websites avoid the organic search penalties from having a slow website.
Propeller has created a solution to add into current WordPress solutions to automatically optimise any image which is uploaded (JPEG, PNG etc) into the CMS and serve the correct modern image format in each browser:
- Automatic serving. No need to re-upload any images
- CMS users require no extra training and can continue to upload any image format
- High compression of images will decrease page load time and give a better customer experience
- Improved Core Vitals score
Propeller focussed on optimising the following sites:
- Zizzi
- ASK Italian
- Coco di Mama
- Azzurri Group
Results
Propeller collected the following data through the Google Page Speed Insights tool:
Across all Azzurri sites, the image optimisation work has radically improved the performance score on average by 20% on Mobile and 26% on Desktop.

Establishing Individuality Across a Multisite Portfolio With 1 Warwick

In their latest piece of client work, Propeller worked with Maslow’s, a group of progressive hospitality brands that seek to create connection and spark change. With their latest member’s club 1 Warwick, an exclusive member’s club based in Soho, they have created a space for work, leisure and fine dining with their connecting restaurant Nessa.
1 Warwick is a members’ House inspired by Maslow’s theory of human motivation and happiness. Located in Soho and set over six floors, 1 Warwick boasts beautifully designed workspaces, members’ lounges, event spaces, a studio and gym – on top of a members only rooftop restaurant and bar with sweeping views of the neighbourhood, something that has played muse to centuries of creatives.
This is one of four websites to launch during Propeller & Maslow’s ongoing partnership, alongside Mortimer House, Mortimer House Kitchen & Nessa. After the successful launch of Maslow’s first membership club & restaurant (Mortimer House & Mortimer House Kitchen), they expanded their portfolio by opening another membership club & restaurant pair (1 Warwick & Nessa). Propeller are now working on a further website – maslows.com, which will serve as the landing page for their company as a whole.
Propeller are incredibly proud to be part of their journey, taking on the responsibility of designing & building a website to capture the magic of the venue & drive membership applications – boasting over 700 in the first 2 months!
Read on to learn how Propeller catapulted 1 Warwick’s digital presence.
The Approach
Propeller partnered with brand & design agency Everything In Between to create a unique look and feel for 1 Warwick, while still maintaining a commonality with Mortimer House in order to reflect the Maslow’s brand as a whole. As Maslow’s continue to extend their reach, they wanted to maintain integrity to their brand while also granting each location a unique personality.
EIB supplied the illustrations and designs for the homepage and Propeller used these assets to build out the website. Propeller used the same WordPress template as Mortimer House, which made the build process quick and efficient (under 1 week!), but skillfully adapted the look and feel of each region to create a website which had a personality distinct from Mortimer House.
They also created a dynamic enquiry form which sends data to a specific location in Pardot depending on the user’s answers to certain questions.
Objectives
Propeller were tasked with implementing a dynamic enquiry form to enable Maslow’s to filter users into specific groups and target them based on their preferences.
They collaborated with design agency Everything In Between to roll out the illustrations and designs they created across the website.
Results
Maslow’s are now able to filter users into specific groups and target based on their preferences, thanks to the dynamic enquiry form Propeller implemented.
Within the first 2 months of launching, Propeller had over 700 applications for users to become members of 1 Warwick.

Inspiring a Life Less Ordinary

Porto Montenegro is a luxury waterfront community, a vibrant nautical village, and a state-of-the-art superyacht marina.
Established in 2009, Porto Montenegro has grown into a premium, full-service marina and residential village in the Adriatic region.
Propeller was brought in to design a visually stunning website that oozed the luxury of the community. It needed to make it easy for users to discover Port’s vast range of offerings via a logical and intuitive sitemap and navigation.
Importantly, it needed to actively encourage users to make enquiries and contact the Porto teams.
The Approach
- Propeller designed a site that allowed Porto Montenegro’s stunning visual to shine with large image regions separated by ample white space.
- They incorporated brand elements & subtle animations to each region to bring movement to the pages whilst maintaining a strong brand presence.
- They crafted a navigation which logically divided Porto Montenegro’s offerings into common-sense categories laid out in a stylish full-page navigation.
- They built a dynamic enquiry system that enabled a user to discover the most relevant enquiry form at any point on the user journey by navigating through one or two simple options.
The Results
The result was a visually spectacular, elegantly stylish, and inspiring site that reflected the ‘life less ordinary. They reduced the average bounce rate on the site from 55% to 30%.

Rosie Akenhead, Head of Digital & Marketing Communications of Hall & Woodhouse, commented:
With this new website template showcased on The Boathouse and designed by Propeller, we were purely inundated with ‘wow’ ‘this is amazing’ and ‘I just love it’ comments. Propeller worked really hard to ensure the usability & styling flowed seamlessly to drive more intrigue and bookings. With careful input and consideration from the team at Hall & Woodhouse layered on top of that, we feel we have really captured the essence of this one-of-a-kind pub in Bath as sleek, special, and absolutely worth a visit. We are immensely proud of it and will continue the roll-out of this style across many more houses.

Serving up Seasonal Competitions and Campaigns

As a well-known high street restaurant, driving bookings were the focus when covid restrictions eased.
This brought new challenges and incentives to drive users to the website and into the restaurant.
The ASK team wanted a solution that not only drove brand partnerships but incentivized customers to use the offers to visit ASK restaurants.
Their Approach
The team at Propeller built a Christmas campaign page, which incentivized users to visit each day for a new offer or voucher.
This “advent calendar” style encouraged users to visit the site each day, increasing the email database as the offers and deals were only given to users when they provided their email addresses.
The partnerships with the likes of Bloom & Wild and Eleanor Bowmer helped drive brand affiliation, and the restaurant offers available encouraged customers to visit their local ASK.
Results
- The 12 days of Christmas campaign resulted in 22,753 competition entries
- A total of 15,479 ‘bonus’ additional entries were made through social media
- 28,666 page views (comprising over 2000 unique page views) and average time spent on the site increasing by 44 seconds and a 34% drop in bounce rate.
- The success of this project reinforced their ongoing partnership with the Azzurri group.

Propeller Optimises Conversion Rate and Enhances Guest Experience for JW Lees

Propeller integrates table and group bookings into a customized booking flow to increase customer experience, conversion rate, and operational efficiency for JW Lees.
As part of Propeller’s ongoing partnership with independent family brewers and pub company JW Lees, they identified an opportunity to drive higher conversion rates with a custom booking flow development project, as a result of Propeller’s ongoing site analysis and optimization.
Propeller had seen strong growth in traffic and engagement across the websites but they had identified that there was a barrier to conversion for some user groups and booking types. Following a comprehensive analysis, user testing, and consultation with LiveRes, they agreed to pursue a custom booking development strategy.
To enable the on-site booking flow to accommodate both smaller table bookings and larger group enquiries, they delivered the following:
- A review of the existing out of the box LiveRes solution.
- Development of a bespoke solution by completing a LiveRes API integration and custom front end development.
- Removal of the barriers to booking being experienced by guests to drive conversion rate.
- Institution of an improved user experience was incorporated.
- Incorporation of much greater flexibility in the UX and design of booking modal LiveRes.
Having reviewed the audiences and the booking preferences that were contributing to challenges in the booking process, Propeller identified the need for a better user experience particularly for guests looking to book for larger party sizes and alternate booking types eg: drinks or meetings.
The development that was completed just prior to the pandemic placed JW Lees in a beneficial position when hospitality venues re-opened as they had a platform that enabled greater flexibility with the requirements for bookings that were enforced particularly in their outdoor areas and for group bookings.
They have seen very positive results in the conversion rate uplift that has been achieved since the project went live and continue to work with JW Lees to ensure Propeller is driving best-in-class user experience as well as growth in conversion rate and operational efficiencies for the on-site teams.

Propeller Launched a Central Brand Website for Cubitt House

As part of Propeller’s ongoing strategic partnership with Cubitt House and building on the successful launch of their individual pub venue websites last year, Propeller is proud to have also recently launched their central brand website showcasing the collection online.
Cubitt House’s unique collection of iconic public houses, with a boutique hotel offering, in Central London deserved a new website to illustrate their best in the class portfolio.
Their shared aim of the partnership is to elevate the Cubitt House brand online, exciting customers and potential employees about what the group offers, conveying the brand philosophy and highlighting the premium collection of venues and their USPs. Propeller designed a site that was an aesthetic extension of the venue websites, that delivered an integrated approach from a central website to local websites and vice versa.
With a strong focus on SEO, campaigns and sharing each of the individual venues USPs, digital storytelling was a key feature of the site to reflect the full proposition. This was particularly important to showcase the focus of Cubitt House on sustainability, provenance and their relationships with their food suppliers as one of their key F&B USPs. This will be supported through the ongoing production of SEO focused content through the new blog functionality.
Key objectives included:
- Implementation of a clear booking strategy for table, hotel and events bookings.
- Ensuring the cross-selling of pubs and spaces across the estate.
- Clearly conveying different types of events and packages available.
- Incorporation of their CRM and loyalty strategy through the migration of the existing database to Propeller’s proprietary CRM platform and the development of preference centre and competition functionality to drive growth and engagement.
- Particular focus was to be made on expanding the visibility of the weddings, meetings and corporate packages that were available and communicating these offerings to the relevant target audiences.
- The site was also built to enable the digital activation of subsidiary parts of the business, including the gifting proposition and built with scalability and flexibility in mind to be able to incorporate future planned operational extensions.
- Operationally, it was also a key objective to promote the recruitment, the employer brand and driving applications across the business which was supported with the ATS integration with Harri.
- SEO focused landing pages were developed utilising many of the digital storytelling elements to support in the promotion of key services, including weddings, meetings and parties, as well as seasonal campaign landing pages and new openings.

Propeller Helps Gallio Pizza Re-Imagining Artisan Pizza Delivery in London

With lockdown in full swing, Propeller partnered with Gallio to launch their feel-good pizza concept from their new Mediterranean dark kitchen concept.
If ever there has been a time to be launching a delivery focused pizza concept, arguably 2020 has been prime time.
Gallio initially focused on a delivery-only concept to bring their innovative take on pizza to Londoners in lockdown however the site had to be built with the scalability and flexibility to be able to transition with the brands plans to add additional delivery locations, as well as plans to eventually open physical venues in addition to the delivery offering.
Given the timing of the launch of the new concept, it was imperative that the opening strategy was broken down into key areas to support the launch and build brand awareness, including a database growth strategy to facilitate ongoing communication with the growing community.
The site includes:
- Dual partnership for deliveries, directly through Gallio with Slerp and also with Deliveroo.
- Carefully planned UX and design / UI to ensure a clear user experience.
- Optimisation around showcasing the offering and guiding users through key areas of the site.
- WordPress CMS enabling the in-house team to have control over all areas of the site and the ability to amend all content and images on demand.
- Digital storytelling elements of the site for inspiration and ethos firmly rooted in the Mediterranean, where sharing fresh, healthy, vibrant and natural food is celebrated.

Propeller Generated Accelerated Digital Transformation for Leon Restaurant Group

Digital agency Propeller helped LEON restaurant group to reach a significant acceleration of digital adoption.
The Feed Britain store was launched by the LEON restaurant group to sell fresh produce, shelf goods and other food items in London during the pandemic. The site also incorporated a social impact element through the collection of donations for NHS workers at checkout.
There was a fulfilment restriction as deliveries were limited to specific London postcodes, which required the implementations of Shopify scripts to enable this and validate orders by postcode. Propeller also partnered with Shopify partners Yotpo and Klaviyo to gather reviews and for flow driven, automated email campaigns.
The launch of the store was in response to the immediate and significant change in consumer needs with social distancing and lockdown measures being brought in across the UK. Fast decisions were made by the LEON restaurants team to evolve the brand and the offering to continue to deliver healthy and convenient food options through this new channel.
COVID-19 has created the need to pivot for a huge number of restaurant, food and beverage brands which has led to a significant acceleration of digital transformation and adaption in the delivery and direct to consumer segment. Consumer search trends and purchase behaviours changed virtually overnight but these behaviour changes have been gradually infiltrating the market over recent years as consumers interests and expectations have begun to shift in recent years with the growth of D2C and delivery platforms across a number of market segments.
Not only did the development of Feed Britain focus on the core values of the LEON restaurants brand but responded to communities needs in real-time in terms of both consumer demand and support for the NHS through the donation capability of the site. The team took the opportunity to think big and transform their operation to match customer expectations in a new digital infrastructure.
