Ford’s aim was to develop a new language for blind passengers and the company has come up with a prototype window, named “Feel the View”. The smart window helps passengers feel the experience of viewing outside through their fingers, accompanied by AI-vocal assistant.
Conceived and created together with Ford Italy‘s local agency GTB Rome and Aedo (a start up that develops products for the visually impaired), “Feel the View” prototype is placed above a passenger window.
When it’s presses on the button, the device takes a picture of the view that the passenger wants to feel.
Federico Russo, executive creative director of GTB Rome said:
When the idea was at its first stage, we looked for suppliers all around the world to understand what was the best way to make it come to life. During the last Maker Fair held in Rome we met Aedo Project, an Italian startup specialized in devices for visually impaired people.
The haptic interface implemented on some of their projects has opened up an all new world for us, allowing us to think like blind people would do.
As Ford shared the process, the captured frame is then transformed into a high contrast monochrome image that’s reproduced on the glass using LED.
The device makes vibrations of 255 different intensity at the point of the passenger’s touch.
The experience continues with putting image into context enabled by an integrated vocal assistant, connected to the car’s audio system and uses artificial intelligence, for visually-impaired user.
Ford Italy spokesperson Alù Saffi said in a statement:
We seek to make people’s lives better and this was a fantastic opportunity to help blind passengers experience a great aspect of driving. The technology is advanced, but the concept is simple – and could turn mundane journeys into truly memorable ones.
“Real progress happens only when advantages of a new technology become available to everybody.“, Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company.
The new prototype window developed by Ford has just reminded us the words above and there is no doubt that the company is working hard to follow this path.
