We talked with The Good Marketer’s Founder and Director Tom Welbourne. He told us about the London-based agency’s business approach and what makes them different.
Tom Welbourne told us The Good Marketer‘s story from the beginning. Also, he gave some tips to young entrepreneurs.
Q: What was your motivation to start a company in the first place? Which challenges did you face during your journey?
A: My biggest motivation was seeing how bad other agencies were – I had previously worked in a role which allowed me to interact with some of the bigger names in the industry and I saw the ‘hands off’ approach they took and I thought I could do better and offer a fully, integrated hands on service – so I did!
Our initial challenges were similar to most infant businesses and they have evolved as we’ve grown. However, the one challenge which has already remained is building a team who I can trust.
Q: We are curious about The Good Marketer’s business approach and vision. Please tell us the key principles that your team embraces.
For us, it has always about being transparent, flexible and affordable. They mean different things for everybody and we’re proud to say we integrate this through all aspects of the business right down to how we interact with each other as a team to how we bill our clients.
Q: Which social media marketing trends do you follow in 2019?
Facebook Messenger Marketing! With 1.3 billion messenger users, this is definitely one to look out for! As if that wasn’t enough, research has shown that the open rate with messenger marketing is a staggering 70-80% in the first hour of the recipient receiving the message.
We’re already implementing this for a lot of our clients and one of our clients has already seen a 65% drop in the cost per lead when we switched over to Messenger.
Q: What are some useful digital marketing tools that help you and your team accomplish your goals every day?
Asana has been great for us and allows us to interact as a team and keep everything all in one place. We’re also big fans of Zapier and Instapage as they both allow us to deliver big wins for our clients.
Q: Why does your team specifically focus on small to medium sized businesses instead of
Because we believe every business deserves the opportunity to experience great marketing regardless of their budget. There are so many exciting young businesses out there which with the right strategy can get off the ground and become successful – all they need is an agency who understands them and can help them generate a great ROAS.
Q: What do you want to change in the digital marketing industry?
There are a lot of misconceptions around digital marketing and I think people need to understand that it is not as easy as the “Marketing Gurus” on YouTube proclaim it to be!
Q: Which features make you stand out from your competitors?
It mainly goes back to our principles – Transparency is a big one for us – we’re proud to tell our customers exactly how we’ve spent our time on their account each month, something very few agencies do!
Not only that but it is also about communication – it’s great to send over reports with a load of statistics in but if they don’t actually make sense, then they’re pointless. I am constantly setting up Whatsapp groups with our clients which allows discussions and ideas to flow much easier
Q: What piece of advice would you give to young entrepreneurs to start their own business?
Don’t invest in fancy systems early on! I see so many businesses who see the latest software which they think is going to change their lives and 90% of the time it doesn’t. The best investment any young entrepreneur can make is to prioritise their marketing spend and reinvest as much as they can!
Q: What are your expectations from being a DAN member?
We’re super excited to be a DAN member – we’re looking forward to being part of a new community and contributing our knowledge to help other businesses in the marketplace!
