The Role:
We believe that small, collaborative, and cross-functional teams are best equipped to ship the most optimal project outcomes. Within these teams, Design Directors take a principled approach to crafting the visual language and brand experience across our engagements.
As Design Director, you’ll guide teams in concepting and creatively defining the work we produce, from how it functions to how it feels. You’ll lead and inspire visual designers and product designers to produce work that prioritizes innovation over convention, helping our clients bring innovative new digital experiences to market. Applying your expertise in design systems, user experience, interaction, typography, and brand, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the work we ship is exceptional in every way. You’re skilled in brand design, comfortably starting from nothing or leading re-brand work.This is a hands-on role, leading projects from ideation through deployment, while managing, mentoring, supporting, and collaborating with a cross-functional team.
Ideal candidates will have experience working in a digital agency or consultancy environment, with deep expertise at the intersection of brand design and digital product. Your ability to produce work of the highest quality will be clearly demonstrated through a portfolio of work that communicates your strategic approach and your commitment to craft.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead, manage, and empower cross-functional teams to produce exceptional work
- Guide the design process bringing together strength in brand, UX, and UI
- Define project goals and objectives that go beyond the brief
- Drive concepting and ideation in pursuit of innovative approaches and solutions
- Guide the craft of projects that require greater hands-on design direction
- Lead client workshops, presentations, pitches, and reviews
- Develop and build positive and trusting relationships with client-side colleagues
- Foster an environment that balances high performance with happiness and healthiness
- Support new business including pitches and organic growth opportunities
- Help to strengthen our reputation as a leading agency with a commitment to craft
What You’ll Bring:
- 10+ years experience leading design engagements in a digital agency or consultancy
- 3+ years experience leading, mentoring, and building design teams
- Exceptional portfolio of work for notable brands demonstrating mastery of skill and craft
- Expertise in visual design, user experience, UI patterns, typography, grids, brand design, and design systems with a focus on digital product, brand experience, and e-commerce
- Natural ability to communicate, present, and gain buy-in internally and with clients
- Familiarity with service design, design thinking, ideation workshops, and concept sprints
- Knowledge of usability, accessibility, SEO, analytics, and A/B testing
- Personal perspective on design’s ability to shape business, brands, and relationships
- Able to build trust through exceptional management skills, guiding internal and external communications with executive-level stakeholders
This is a hybrid role with three days per week in the studio. Candidates should be residents of Vancouver and able to travel. International applicants will not be considered at this time.
