YouTube Created Its Own Typeface And Called It “YouTube Sans”

YouTube introduced their new, user-friendly font family, YouTube Sans. The typeface currently makes its official debut in the company’s newest product, YouTube TV.

Created by Saffron in partnership with Letterjuice in Barcelona and URW++ in Hamburg, YouTube Sans is designed to be used in both product and marketing communication.

Developed with YouTube‘s UX team, the font family includes medium, light, bold and extra-bold iterations to offer a broad range of uses in and out of the product. Also, the ‘YouTube icon’ is now part of the basic character set, so it can be typed just like any other letter or symbol.

Saffron describes the project in their own website, says;

Together, we’ve developed a font that combines the vibrant, user-friendly world of YouTube with the bold, freewheeling world of cinema and entertainment.

YouTube Sans is the only visual asset that links every touch point of YouTube TV. It will bring brand recognition to a wide variety of digital and non-digital environments. It is slightly quirky and expressive, but also simple and bold, just like the platform it calls home.

It’s very creative and unique to find the inspiration in the brand’s core element, the play button. It’s safe to say that sometimes inspiration lies a lot closer than you think!
