One of the world’s most watched annual sporting events, Super Bowl was played in the previous days and -not surprisingly-, things got social and political for this year’s commercials.
Digiday says advertisers shelled out as much as $5 million for 30 seconds of screentime during this year’s big game, according to ad-tracker Kantar Media. This year’s commercials are just as interesting as Lady Gaga’s halftime show. Just a week after President Trump’s immigration ban, marching everywhere throughout the US and some other things are the ‘game changers’ for this year’s football event.
Therefore, Budweiser celebrated the contributions of foreign nationals on its ad and Audi called a spot about women equality. Of course there are some news from Stranger Things and The Handmaid’s Tale.
Let’s have a look for our top picks, here:
Audi | ‘Daughter’
Audi gives an endorsement of equal pay for women in the spot. A car race contest is happening and there is a girl competing with the boys and she wins the game while his father supports her. The tagline is, “Audi of America is committed to equal pay for equal work.”
Budweiser | ‘Born the Hard Way’
Budweiser’s ‘Born the Hard Way’ spot is portraying the immigration story of the company’s founder, Adolphus Busch. As of today, the spot has got 26m online views. This looks like a very brief response on President Trump’s immigration policy in a graceful way.
Avocados from Mexico | #AvoSecrets
Avocado Lobby welcomes nachos with their #illuminati team spirit, the spot has a sense of humor. The gang has a big secret they need to keep and it’s the health benefits of avocados. Cool.
Nintendo | Switch Commercial
The first Super Bowl commercial of the company, a very gamesome spot is aired. Because of their new product, Nintendo Switch is coming on March 3rd, they ask: “Why are you watching a game when you could be playing a game?” and the featured song is from Imagine Dragons. Very good.
Buick | Cam Newton and Miranda Kerr
After Emily Ratajkowski and Odell Beckham, Buick follows its own way this year. In the commercial, two dads are watching their minors play football and a woman who drove up to the field in a Buick. One dad says “Oh nice, but if that’s a Buick, then my kid’s Cam Newton,” the kid then turns into Cam and plays incredibly well.
After the game, Cam is talking to the coach and they point out another car. “If that’s a Buick, then I’m a supermodel,” then the coach turns to Miranda.
Buffalo Wild Wings | ‘The Conspiracy’ with Brett Favre
In this spot, we see the former quarterback Brett Favre, struggling with the conspiracy theories from his previous games in his dream. The interceptions were not his fault, but Buffalo Wild Wings’.
Stranger Things 2 | Leggo my Eggo
One of the biggest Netflix hits, Stranger Things is coming up with its new season this Halloween, the teaser comes way too earlier than expected. Anyway, it’s a nice move that Eleven’s favourite ones, Eggo waffles are back in the game.
Wix.com | Jason Statham and Gal Gadot
Wix is back in the action with a very unexpected and a great one.Felix, a business owner in a disruptive world, has to deal with Gal Gadot and Jason Statham destroying his bistro.
Coca-Cola | America The Beautiful
Coca-Cola gives a strong message to all those watching Super Bowl LI on Sunday night. The spot is about celebrating moments among all Americans that promote humanity, optimism and equality. ‘Together is Beautiful’ is the tagline.
AirBnb | We accept #Weaccept
“We believe no matter who you are, where you’re from, who you love or who you worship, we all belong. The world is more beautiful the more you accept.” says the company, as they spent $5 million on this ad that is only portraits of different people. The ad was created in three days and aired according to the travel ban. We all know that the company is known for its cause marketing stuff.
Bonus: Under Armour | The Legend of Tom Brady
‘Every kid in Dorchester legally has to be named Tom or Brady. The girls too.’ is my favourite part.
Purposeful, fun, exciting and nifty, every spot has its own way this year. Which one is your favourite Super Bowl commercial?
