Snap Inc. and NBCUniversal announced a new digital content studio to produce original content for Snapchat.
The joint venture will work with various film and programme makers to produce original scripted video for the social app.
With bringing scripted programming, which can be defined as short form comedies and dramas, to mobile screens, the studio will initially be focusing on developing and producing exclusive programming, dedicated to the future of app-centric entertainment.
Based in Santa Monica, the studio is 50-50 owned by Snap and NBCUniversal and it will be led by NBC Entertainment executive Lauren Anderson. With the new title, the Chief Content Officer Anderson said:
As mobile audiences continue to grow, we’re excited to expand the type of content we can develop.
By combining the best-in-class creative expertise of NBCUniversal with the broad digital reach of Snapchat, we have the unique ability to take mobile programming to the next level, creating compelling shows for both viewers and advertisers
Sean Mills, Snap’s head of content shared:
We fundamentally believe that mobile is a new medium. Because that creative process is so unique, we felt there was a need for a fully dedicated entity focused on that.
Indie filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass, who created Donut Creative studio became the first creative partners of this new joint venture. As Duplass brothers mentioned, they’re targeting 8-10 minutes per episode, with the first series to debut in 2018 for Snap and NBCU.
Mark Duplass said:
We’re super psyched to partner with Snap and NBCUniversal. For us, shooting in that vertical mobile format is a terrifying and thrilling creative challenge.
Last fall, NBCUniversal has came up with an original show, a unique version of The Voice for Snapchat by creating a “TV-like” format that fits mobile devices. The show was nominated for Emmy Awards and NBCU has continued to work with Snap Inc. for new projects afterwards.
Increasing the investment on social media content development and creative production, Snapchat Inc. and NBCUniversal has raised the bar.
This new JV would inspire industry experts to think more content-focused projects and present unique user experience on social platforms and entertainment industry.
