Adidas Uses Digital Light Synthesis In Its Futurecraft 4D Sneakers

Adidas partnered up with Carbon 3D to create Futurecraft 4D: the first footwear that is crafted with light and oxygen.

The brand revealed Futurecraft 4D, the sneaker that is designed with a manufacturing technology called “Digital Light Synthesis”. It helps creating 3D objects by mixing light and oxygen in a liquid form. The Silicon Valley-firm Carbon 3D claims that the project helps create high-performance and durability, more than the other conventional 3D printing methods.

According to Adidas, the purpose of the manufacturing process is to deliver the most innovative and personalized running shoes for every athlete. The method will allow the brand to make production on a large scale. Adidas released 3D-printed running shoes to the public recently, but their availability is limited to 500 pieces. Before Fall 2017, the shoe is set to launch with 5,000 pairs.

Eric Liedtke, Adidas Group Board Responsible for Global Brands, said,

With digital light synthesis, we venture beyond limitations of the past, unlocking a new era in design and manufacturing processes. By charting a new course for our industry, we can unleash our creativity-transforming not just what we make, but how we make it.

Dr.Joseph Desimone, Carbon Co-founder and CEO, said,

Despite the influence of technology to improve almost every other aspect of our lives, for eons the manufacturing process has followed the same four steps that make up the product development cycle – design, prototype, tool, produce. Carbon has changed that; we’ve broken the cycle and are making it possible to go directly from design to production. We’re enabling engineers and designers to create previously impossible designs, and businesses to evolve their offerings, and FutureCraft 4D is evidence of that.

Our partnership with adidas will serve as an ongoing testament to how the digital revolution has reached the global manufacturing sector, changing the way physical goods are designed, engineered, made, and delivered.

We bet this technology will take Olympians’ performance to the next level!
