A person responsible for maintaining a website is known as a webmaster. This title refers to web architects, developers, site authors, publishers, etc. The main objective that all of them have in common is reaching a desired amount of traffic on their websites.
Many different strategies are used to accomplish this goal and one of them is SEO which has been around since the middle of the 1990s, or almost ever since the first search engines were launched.
In 1994, the first search engine called altavista.com was launched. It quickly spread and it became one of the most used search engines.
In the following years it started losing ground to Google, and eventually was bought by Yahoo in 2003. The service was shut down in 2013 and the domain was redirected to Yahoo’s search site.
In 1997, three major search engines were launched: Msn.com, Yandex.ru, and Google.com. Google search was also launched in 1997. It gained its success due to the patented algorithm called PageRank, which helps rank web pages that match a given search string.
Today, is the most used search engine on the internet, and an infographic by SEO Tribunal shows that it has more than 3 billion searches per day.
Microsoft launched MSN Search which consisted of a search engine, index, and web crawler. It later evolved to Windows Live Search and Live Search, to finally become Bing in 2009.
